The foundation for all Ayurvedic practice is to first be able to function as an "Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor." Such an individual is equipped with the fundamental knowledge of Ayurveda and understands its basic principles. He or she should be capable of ascertaining the following Ayurvedic information about a client:

  • Constitution of the individual

  • Constitutional factors behind any disease condition the individual may have

  • He or she should be able to recommend the following remedial measures and explain them clearly and thoroughly:

    • Diet per constitution

    • Lifestyle recommendations per constitution

    • General herbal remedies per constitution

    • General recommendations to deal with primary doshic imbalances

In other words, the chief factor that characterizes an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor is the ability to determine imbalances relative to the Doshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha of the Ayurvedic system. This is the basis of all Ayurvedic treatment. Without having this capacity, one cannot go far with Ayurveda. On the other hand, once having mastered this knowledge, all other approaches of Ayurvedic healing become accessible to the student because all treatment ultimately consists of balancing these fundamental biological forces on more intricate levels.

The Ayurvedic Healing course aims primarily at helping the student to become an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor, which is how those who successfully complete the course can see themselves. Individuals can learn to become Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselors without having previous training or licensure in any medical practice (though naturally this is very helpful). However, as this is a distance learning program, we cannot guarantee that students who complete it are competent in their application of Ayurveda. For this additional study is always advisable, particularly in the clinical application of Ayurveda.
