The Sun Turns North – Inner Freedom
Today is a most auspicious day in the Vedic calendar, called Uttarayana. It is celebrated in India with “holy dips” in sacred rivers, especially where they come together in confluence.
The Sun reaches his furthest most point in the south and turns to begin his journey north for the next 6 months. This is the true start of the year. Then he will turn south again and this is called Dakshinaya.
What is the significance of this? The Sun is the indicator of the soul, both individually and collectively. The Sun is the portal in this galaxy, through which Divine life force sustains our bodies, minds, spirits and the body of the earth, her elements, and creatures. He is the intelligence of the mind, the perception of the eyes, the energy of the body, the love in our hearts and the passion which moves us to learn grow and help our fellow earth dwellers.
In Vedic cosmology, there are two paths of the soul. The southern path is the path of smoke, the material world, family, relationships, and unfinished karma we return to this level to resolve. The northern path is the path away from the ego and its bondage and toward liberation and freedom. It is the spiritual path. It provides the sense of a big inhalation of energy and inspiration for the next six months as the Sun moves toward Capricorn. It is a time of new beginnings, fresh starts, ideas coming to fruition and the energy to carry out our heart’s desires.
Also, we find Saturn today in the beautiful nakshatra in Aquarius, called Satibhisak, or she who is surrounded by 100 healers. Another symbol of the star constellation is the indigenous tradition of the medicine wheel, the sacred circle, the enclosed space of healing and transformation both individually and collectively. In the Vedas there is a saying, “As above, so it is below”. This is the time of healing personally and collectively. The sign Aquarius, where we find Satibhisak, also represents the quantum field, the one is the many and the many is the one. Heal yourself and this will ripple out to harmonize all your relations. Where there is conflict, look to yourself first.
And the Moon is in the auspicious nakshatra that brings past life merit, Purva Badrapada, the great saint who stands on one leg. This nakshatra is of the one who made a great spiritual sacrifice in a previous life and brings to this life, material abundance. It is also the beam of light that discovers the truth and the sanctuary for deep healing and rejuvenation.
Altogether, we are supported today to cleanse and renew.
You may notice that Vedic astrology is quite different from what we are used to in the west. It actually is more astronomically correct in regards to our current position as relates to the star constellations. Vedic astrology, called Jyotisha, or the science of light, emphasizes the Ascendant (rising star) position and then the Moon, over the position of the Sun in one’s birth cart.
